Sandblasting crews cleaning the bridge on Tuesday exposed the bridge supports and found additional deterioration.
Due to safety concerns, the Berrien County Road Department has decided to close the bridge until the rehabilitation project is complete.
Originally, one lane of traffic was set to be open during the project, which began in March.
The project is expected to be complete by August.
Drivers are asked to follow the detour route of M-139 North to BL I-94 to M-63.
