Nappanee woman sentenced for wire fraud targeting the elderly

U.S. Attorney\'s Office, Southern District of Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A Nappanee woman will spend nearly 2 years in prison for committing wire fraud on elderly, vulnerable adults.

According to court documents, 57-year-old Brenda Walters pled guilty to ten wire fraud charges. She was hired by the non-profit Organization A as a bookkeeper. This organization provides programs and services for elderly adults. Prosecutors say she was assigned to its Guardianship Program, which acts as a court-appointed legal guardian for clients unable to manage their own affairs. Walters oversaw over 20 clients. Her duties included managing accounts and paying bills.

Court documents show that Walters stole money from her clients' personal bank accounts for herself. This was achieved by falsifying bank statements. She also used client accounts directly to pay for things such as bills, clothes, parties, and vacations. In total, she stole roughly $79,000.

Walters was sentenced to 22 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
