New app created to help Hoosier travel during inclement weather

A new mobile app is bringing county travel alerts and status updates to Hoosiers’ mobile phones.

The Indiana Office of Technology and Indiana Department of Homeland Security collaborated on creating the mobile app.

In addition to weather, the app includes notifications of flooding, hazardous material spills and other events that could affect your travel.

Features also include being able to set alerts for counties, county weather conditions, viewing temperature by county, and emergency management agency contact info.

State officials say the website’s status map was the most visited page on IN.gov during the 2016 winter season.

Governor Mike Pence says the app will make drivers’ travel much easier after many were already using a website for these status updates.

"This new app will be a great on-the-go resource for citizens and visitors to Indiana. The travel advisory map has been one of the most popular pages on the State of Indiana website, particularly during times of inclement weather. The app will be even more convenient, and we hope many people will use this as a resource to make informed travel decisions,” said Governor Pence.

State officials say the map generated around 5 million visitors between the beginning of December 2013 and the end of March 2014.

The Indiana Travel Advisory app is available to download for iPhone in the App Store, and Android in the Google Play Store.
