New school board member discusses goals

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. –- Lifelong Benton Harbor resident Lisa Gulley was elected to the Benton Harbor School Board. The district is financially strapped, so what does she have planned?

Gulley says as the newest board member she wants to drastically change the way things are done.

She emphasized both safety and education.

She says she will push to reduce class sizes and motivate kids to get involved in after school clubs and sports teams.

She also wants to focus on improving communication between parents and the schools.

Gulley says sometimes we forget just how important teachers are.

“Just think, eight hours a day the kids are here at school with the teacher, so that's definitely important. They need to know that they are appreciated. They took cuts in their pay to remain teaching in our district so you know they have a dedication to our children,” said Gulley.

Other issues that Gulley plans to focus on this January are the school budget and the high pregnancy rates.
