Group offers class on immigration to seniors

GOSHEN, In. - A local college is ready to tackle one of the nation's most complex and contentious issues --- immigration.

It's holding a class aimed at a different audience - seniors.

The Lifelong Learning Institute of Elkhart is holding the class in Goshen today.

Lecturers will look at America's attitude toward immigration after huge changes in proposed by President Donald Trump.

We spoke with the instructor, Richard Aguirre, who's a former journalist who's been covering immigration for the past 40 years.

He says the class is aimed at seniors because they can share their wisdom and experience to help drive the conversation.

He also says most of the people who have signed up for the class are either immigrants - or their ancestors were immigrants.

"Many of the people I've met in the community not only knew when their ancestors came but know the names of the ships their ancestors came on, and so they can resonate really closely with the stories of immigrants and refugees," Aguirre says.

The classes will be held at the Greencroft Goshen reetirement community. For more on the classes, click HERE.
