Niles sinkhole expected to be repaired by Tuesday evening

ABC57

NILES, Mich. -- A sinkhole caused the sudden closure of Broadway Street between 7th 9th Steets Monday morning in Niles.

Niles Public Works says the issue was caused in part by an inactive sanitary pipe, found to be broken and full of debris.

Officials expect the road to be open to traffic by end of day Tuesday.

Niles Public Works released the following statement:

"We are optimistic that repairs will be completed and the roadway reopened to traffic by the end of the day tomorrow. Due to current weather conditions, all work has been temporarily halted for the remainder of today to ensure the safety of all crew members.

Regarding the cause of the issue, an old, inactive sanitary lateral pipe was discovered during excavation and is believed to be a contributing factor, as it was found to be broken and full of debris. Additional excavation will take place tomorrow to confirm and complete the proper repair."
