NIPSCO fined over $1.1 million for safety violations

NIPSCO has been assessed $1,138,000 in civil penalties for the company’s failure to mark its pipelines within two days as required by safety procedures, according to the Indiana Regulatory Commission. The penalty is the highest in state history.

The penalty is part of a settlement between NIPSCO and the commission that was approved in November 2017. NIPSCO previously paid $900,000 for violations dating back to 2015, $765,000 for violations in 2017 and $1.1 million for violations in 2018.

The $1.13 penalty is for violations that occurred in 2019.

All penalties collected will go to the state’s General Fund.

None of the fines can be recovered from customers.
