Notre Dame Law School Eviction Clinic investigating poor living conditions at Hoffman Hotel
Notre Dame Law School Eviction Clinic SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Notre Dame Law School Eviction Clinic announced it recently investigated the living conditions at the Hoffman Hotel on W. LaSalle Street following tenant complaints about unsanitary conditions, safety concerns, and high electric bills.
The clinic commonly provides pro bono legal services for nearby community members
The clinic says after hearing from residents, they hope this will lead to further investigations and published pieces reporting on what the poorest and most vulnerable members of the public have to endure.
The complaints include mold, trash, plumbing issues, and non-tenants staying in the building.
A spokesperson for South Bend released the following statement regarding the Hoffman Hotel:
"The city has received complaints through 311 regarding the Hoffman Hotel, and RSVP has scheduled inspections when tenants have reached out. Property Management has changed twice in the last year and has been non-responsive to our efforts to gain compliance. We have been invoicing 5 separate units weekly for more than 6 months, and in February, we sent about $25,000 in fees and fines to collections."
The clinic has released several photos within a document of the investigation's findings.
