Officers who assisted with unexpected Valentine's Day 'delivery' reunite with family
Indiana State Police KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- A Milford couple's Valentine's Day took a surprising turn when the baby they were expecting to arrive in late February decided to make an early appearance.
The Indiana State Police report Josh and Katelyn Wuthrich made a 911 call just before 11 p.m. to let Kosciusko County Dispatch know they were taking S.R. 15 south to get to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital in Warsaw and couldn't wait for an ambulance.
ISP Trooper Austin Slone was traveling north on S.R. 15 at around 11:08 p.m. near 1100 North when he noticed the Wuthrichs traveling south.
Slone then turned around and activated his emergency lights, at which point the vehicle pulled to the side of the road.
Josh then told Slone, "We're having a baby!"
The report states at the same time, Milford Police Department Deputy Marshall Dallas Rice was searching for the Wuthrichs. Rice then came upon Slone and the couple.
The two men then decided to escort the Wuthrichs to the hospital since it seemed like the baby was coming quickly.
Police say the couple arrived at the hospital in the nick of time because the baby, Ellie, was delivered in the front seat of the car right as they pulled into the ER's parking lot around 11:16 p.m.
Hospital staff then came out and took mom and baby inside for care.
At the end of February, Slone and Rice met with the Wuthrichs at the Milford Police Department to talk about the experience and meet baby Ellie.
Police gave Ellie a custom-made blanket with each department logo on it.
