One arrested for reported stabbings in South Bend
UPDATE: In November 2023, the State of Indiana filed a motion to dismiss Morgan's case.
ORIGINAL STORY:
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A 48-year-old man was arrested after stabbing two people on Sunday evening, according to the South Bend Police Department.
Robert Lee Morgan was formally charged with two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, police were called to a local hospital for a man who said he was stabbed in the 600 block of S. Michigan Street.
The victim told police he saw Morgan put a knife to someone in the parking lot of a gas station and then put that same person in a headlock.
As the victim approached Morgan with a baseball bat, Morgan allegedly said he was going to kill someone and then stabbed the victim in the chest.
The victim then drove himself to the hospital.
After speaking with the first victim, police were told a second victim had come into the hospital with stab wounds.
The second victim was with the first victim when he was stabbed and said he was also stabbed by the same person, reports said.
He had lacerations on his arm, right hip and an abrasion to his knee.
Both victims’ injuries were non-life-threatening.
The investigation eventually led police to Morgan.
When police tried to confront Morgan at his home in the 600 block of S. St. Joseph Street, he barricaded himself inside, according to reports.
South Bend Police’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team eventually went into the home to arrest Morgan.
Another person who was in Morgan’s house at the time was not injured.
