One dead, one injured after shooting in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. -- One man is dead and one woman is hurt after a shooting in Elkhart late Saturday evening.

Elkhart police say it happened at 11:26 p.m. in the 300 block of Wagner Ave.

When officers arrived, they found two victims and transported them both to Elkhart General Hospital.

A 26-year-old man was later pronounced dead. A 25-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries to the lower part of her body.

Family set up a marker to remember the victim, who they identified as Ta’Derius Malone. It was adorned with a large teddy bear, flowers, candles, and a sign to mourn their lost son, father, and friend.

They left a poster board up reading, “We miss you Ta’Derius, Love Kids, Daddy, and Mom.”

The family says they are holding another vigil this Wednesday, with the time to be announced later.

Police say was no immediate threat to public safety and there have been no arrests at this time.

With the perpetrator still on the loose, neighbors say they just want answers and to have the violence in this neighborhood just disappear.

One, Brandon Replogle, says he hopes the person come forward on their own to allow the family to have at least that answer as they continue to grieve.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating.
