One of the coldest Halloween's on record today

NOW: One of the coldest Halloween’s on record today

Happy Halloween! This forecast definitely doesn’t feel like a treat, but unfortunately, it’s not a trick either. That’s right, we will be seeing cold temperatures and our first chance of snow for the season.

Our possibility of snowflakes picks up this afternoon with the chance for snow lasting into tonight. We could see some accumulation on grass and cold surfaces, but the ground is too warm for it to stick around long. Snow today shouldn't have much of an impact on road conditions, aside from some reduced visibility due to blowing snow.

Even more impactful than the snow though - especially for trick-or-treaters - is the cold weather.

Highs today will top out in the upper 30's, and by 6PM, we’ll still be in the mid 30’s falling into the lower 30’s by midnight. It’ll feel even colder with wind chills in the 20’s and upper teens, so you’ll want to make sure to layer up to stay warm.

We know to expect chilly weather and some snow today, but how common are these conditions for the spooky holiday?

Snow isn't something we see on Halloween very often. According to data from the Midwestern Regional Climate Center, we have only seen snow on Halloween 10 times since record keeping began in the late 1800's. Out of those years, only half had measurable snowfall with the other half bringing just a trace amount. As far as temperatures go, if our forecasted high of 38° verifies, today will tie for the 2nd coldest Halloween on record.
