One woman dies in vehicle fire

ABC 57

BRISTOL, Ind. -- Before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, the Bristol Police Department responded to a vehicle on fire by a bridge, with a woman trapped inside.

According to the Bristol Police Department, the flames were too intense to reach the woman before the fire could be put out, after which point she was discovered deceased inside the vehicle.

Around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, officers with the Bristol Police Department were dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Division Street and Vistula Street.

There, officers found a vehicle on fire and engulfed in smoke wedged between the bridge and a concrete foundation on the east side of the bridge.

An injured man under the bridge stated that he'd been inside the vehicle and that there was still a woman inside.

Efforts to reach the woman were unsuccessful and, once the flames had been extinguished, she was found dead inside.

Officers also reported visible damage to the bridge from the fire, but the Elkhart County Highway Department inspected the bridge and deemed it safe to be used as normal.

This remains an active investigation and the Bristol Police Department asks that anyone with any information about the incident please call them at (574) 848-4464 or the non-emergency dispatch number at (574) 533-4151.
