Overnight vandalism leads to power outage in downtown Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The City of Mishawaka reports around 2 a.m. Thursday a section of downtown Mishawaka's electrical grid experienced an unexpected outage due to deliberate vandalism to Mishawaka Utilities Electric equipment.
City officials say this act of vandalism damaged vital infrastructure, causing a disruption in electric service to nearby homes and businesses.
Mishawaka Utilities Electric Division team responded and once the affected equipment was assessed and isolated, crews worked through the morning hours.
Power was restored to all impacted customers by 3:30 a.m.
Mishawaka Utilities is now working with law enforcement to investigate the damage, identify suspects, and take appropriate action to prevent future events.
City officials also want to remind the public that electric infrastructure, including power lines, transformers, utility boxes, and other components are high-voltage systems, are essential and can be extremely dangerous whether tampered with unlawfully or approached without proper training or knowledge. You can be severely injured and even killed.
