Police looking for driver that caused Cass County accident

Dowagiac, Mich. - Right now police are looking for the driver of a car that fled from a serious accident in northern Cass County this morning.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department was called to a semi truck versus car accident just after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning on M-51, five miles north of Dowagiac. According to police, a third car caused the accident.

The driver of the semi, 41-year-old Yusef Mohamud, was travelling northbound on M-51 and struck 32-year-old Nichole Sanson of Dowagaic who was travelling southbound.

“I got in my house and all I heard was a boom,” said Barb Chavis, a neighbor who lives a few hundred feet from the accident scene.

“As soon as I turned the corner and heard the noise I saw a car racing northward on M-51,” said Linda, a witness and first responder. She said Sanson’s injuries were very serious and several people were needed to free Sanson from her car, a Geo Metro.

Police said the driver of the third car was passing the semi and caused Sanson to swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic. “He obviously was in a hurry and caused quite a catastrophe,” said Linda.

The Geo Metro sat crumpled on its passenger side on the side of the road. “If there was a passenger they wouldn’t have made it,” said Chavis.

Cass County police are actively looking for the driver of the third vehicle. It’s described by witnesses as a red car with front-end damage being driven by a white male. The driver was last seen driving northbound on M-51.

Sanson was airlifted to a hospital in Kalamazoo with serious injuries. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
