Lapeer County -- A mother is charged with murder after police say she stabbed her 24-year-old son who suffered from cerebral palsy before turning the knife on herself.

Investigators said 59-year-old Tamara Leonard of Otter Lake called 911 around 9:45 p.m. on Friday, August 5 and told dispatchers she had just stabbed another person and herself.

When officers arrived at the home on Briggs Road, they found Leonard's 24-year-old son, Theron Leonard, with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Leonard was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police said her son suffered from cerebral palsy and she was his primary caregiver.

Leonard has been charged with open murder.

She is being held in the Lapeer County Jail with no bond.
