KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reports officers are investigating the drowning of a 4-year-old child which occurred around 4:45 p.m. Sunday in Syracuse Lake in Kosciusko County.

Kosciusko County Dispatch says they received a 911 call about a missing 4-year-old in the 800 block of East North Shore Drive in Syracuse.

Officers with the Syracuse Police Department arrived minutes later and removed the child from beneath a pier in three feet of water and began CPR.

The report states the child was then taken to Goshen Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m.

Authorities' preliminary investigation indicates the child wandered from inside a home the child was visiting.

Police say after a brief search of the house, one of the child's parents called 911 when they couldn't find the child.

The child was believed to have been seen 20 minutes before being pulled from the water.

Indiana Conservation Officers preliminarily categorized the death as accidental.
