Potawatomi Zoo welcomes Frankie the rhino

Potawatomi Zoo

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 24-year-old rhino named Frankie arrived at the Potawatomi Zoo on April 2, and zoo officials say a celebration is planned for Saturday with Franky's Tacos at the zoo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Frankie weighs 5200 pounds and is seven feet tall.

He came from Brevard Zoo in Florida, another Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited facility.

Zoo officials say the move occurred following a recommendation by the Southern White Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan, a program that oversees population management of specific species within Association of Zoos and Aquariums member institutions.

Officials say with Potawatomi Zoo housing Frankie, it frees up space for other zoos to continue rhino breeding programs and artificial insemination research.
