Real fire interrupts fire department training session in Elkhart
The Osolo Township Fire Department's monthly training session was interrupted by a real fire in the North Lake Apartments in Elkhart on Sunday.
The fire occurred in a building located on Brookstream Circle.
The call came in around 9:30 A.M. of smoke filling the apartment building.
Osolo Township had all of their crew at the station for monthly training, so they were able to dispatch all of their engines to the fire.
Upon arrival, fire crews located the fire in a rear vacant unit.
"The smoke was intense enough where you could not see your hand in front of your face. I would say in about 15 to 20 minutes, we were able to locate a very small but smokey fire in the back of the apartment," said Joe Johnston, the Assistant Chief of the Osolo Township Fire Department.
Everyone was safely evacuated from the building and were able to return a couple of hours later.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
