SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Real ID requirements officially went into effect Tuesday, meaning travelers must now present a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another approved form of identification to board domestic flights. Travelers without the Real ID should expect additional security screenings and will still be able to board flights with another approved form of identification like a valid US passport.
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to strengthen security standards for state-issued identification following the 9/11 attacks. Real IDs are marked with a star in the top corner and require additional documentation to obtain, including proof of identity, Social Security number and residency.
