SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Relay for life Michiana camped out at the St. Joseph Country Fair Grounds as they brought together over 250 cancer survivors, supporters, and family members to embark on a 24-hour walk.
The night was filled with live music, activities, and loads of support. In the end they were able to raise over $115,000 for cancer research and increase awareness on the fight against cancer.
Everyone who came out had their own “why,” according to Jamie Miller.
“We do it because cancer impacts all of us, everyone of us has a why, someone we know, some we love that has fought or is fighting cancer,” he said.
The money goes directly back to the community, with some seeing the strides made over the last 28 years firsthand.
"The goal is that we raise enough money for research, because without that research to help with the treatments I would not be here today,” said five-time cancer survivor Julie Smith, who is currently in remission.
Last year, the American Cancer Society organized 2,500 events nationwide, raising an impressive $285 million. This is the largest Relay event in Indiana.
