ST. JOSEPH, Mich. - A high rise built in the 1960s in downtown St. Joseph is finally opening back up to residents after months of renovations.
Lake View Terrace, a 15-story building built in 1969, was shut down in January for emergency repairs because of repeated broken pipes, flooding and mold.
The complex houses low-income, disabled and senior community members.
Residents in all 107 units were forced to move to hotels during the $6.1 million upgrade, which was paid for by the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Renovations include new flooring, plumbing, electrical work and more.
Half of the residents have moved back in, with the rest expected to be back by Labor Day.
Despite the major fixes, the St. Joseph Housing Commission is asking for the public’s help in purchasing more appliances for the building, having exhausted funding from the housing and urban development department.
The commission is looking to raise $100,000 for apartment appliances.
