Reverend Jesse L. Jackson's life and legacy celebrated at public homegoing service in Chicago
CHICAGO -- People from all over the country came to Chicago Friday afternoon to pay their final respects to Reverend Jesse L. Jackson.
A public homegoing was held at House of Hope. Political giants were in attendance including former presidents Clinton, Obama and Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Other big names include Rev. Al Sharpton, Governor Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Hudson who performed "A Change Is Gonna Come."
Also in attendance was South Bend local and community organizer, Henry Davis, Jr. He reminisced about the relationship he and Rev. Jackson shared.
"You were working with a living legend. You were working with a trailblazer, somebody who walked with King. I have always been honored to be able to receive some mentorship, to receive some support from somebody that knows how it works," Davis shared.
Thomas Finch showed up to the service in his royal purple and old gold, the colors of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, a black Greek lettered organization that Rev. Jackson was also a member of.
Find says Jackson's work was rooted in helping the little guy such as himself, he's a businessman in public remand video production.
"I think that Reverend Jackson, with him opening doors and putting pressure on a lot of these big companies gave us small businessmen a seat at the table, and since then, my business has flourished," Finch explained.
Davis says there are countless ways to ensure Rev. Jackson's legacy will live on forever.
"Keep fighting hard, keep the hope alive, remembering that I am somebody right, and recognizing that my people, my black African American youth, need a role model, and we need to continue to protect the interest of our future."
Finch echoed that same sentiment.
"I'm just thankful for that I had the opportunity to walk with and look up to Jesse Louis Jackson. He was a mentor, he was a leader, and he was my friend and brother. May God hold a special place for him and may we keep his legacy alive."
Reverend Jackson's final homegoing service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Chicago. This will be a private ceremony.
