South Bend seniors explore local parks, event centers, and available programs during Senior Spirit Week
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- 2026 is the 6th year that the South Bend Venues Parks & Arts (SBVPA) has held a Senior Spirit week.
According to organizers, Senior Spirit Week is their chance to highlight programming specifically for the 50+ community at different South Bend parks, all while local seniors enjoy the company of friends, and have fun with themed days and activities.
The SBVPA partners with Real Services, Dream Center and other organizations to make the week possible. Each day of the week (Tues. - Fri.) featured a different activity, as well as classes, info sessions, giveaways, and more, all for free.
On Tuesday the seniors enjoyed a get-together called 'Nature & Neighbors' held at Rum Village Nature Center. Wednesday's activities took place at the Howard Park Event Center and included Bingo, a picnic lunch provided by Real Services, and the crowning of a King and Queen.
Thursday was pickleball as well as a leisurely lunch shared in the Silver Lounge of the MLK Dream Center. And capping off the week was a fun 'drive-in' themed movie day featuring the film "The Bucket List." The event included popcorn, ice cream, and chili dogs to help create a drive-in-type atmosphere.
Today's movie event took place at the Charles Black Community Center in LaSalle Park. The community center offers a full-sized gymnasium, community room with kitchen, computer lab, weight room and game room.
Because it is a Real Services nutrition site, seniors at the Charles Black Community Center can enjoy a healthy lunch while socializing. They also have lots of new programs, so seniors are encouraged to stop in and take home a list of upcoming activities.
Senior Spirit Week is an engaging way to emphasize the importance of programs that can help them stay active and socially connected. The movie event also serves as an opportunity for seniors to discover the Charles Black Community Center and its available daily activities and services.
Cynthia Taylor, the Director of Community Programming told us:
"Yes, so it's very important to have these activities, so that people do know that the center is here, and that there are activities for them to come to. If they've never been here, it's an opportunity for them to be able to see another side of town, another facility, get to know the staff, and just bring their friends if they would like, and participate. We also have Real Services here on a daily basis, which is another program that they can come (to), and they can have a meal, and then they can engage with others."
