Shooting in Elkhart Friday afternoon

ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Madison Street Friday afternoon due to reports of gunfire.

The call came in at approximately 12:57 p.m. Friday at the 900 block of Madison Street near Mary F Beck Elementary.

Officers combed the area but could not find any victims or signs of property damage.

Minutes later around 1:15 p.m. police were dispatched to Elkhart General Hospital in regard to a gunshot victim.

Authorities say the 45-year-old victim reported that he was in the area meeting with an acquaintance.

Allegedly, the acquaintance robbed the victim of his wallet and shot him before fleeing.

The victim drove himself to the hospital following the incident suffering what appeared to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim is expected to be ok and the investigation is ongoing.
