Convicted Laurel Woods shooter sentenced Thursday

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents reveal the suspect in the non-fatal shooting at Laurel Woods Apartments on May 18, has been found guilty and was sentenced on Thursday.

Jamal Leonard was initially charged with Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony, and Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 Felony.

Documents show his charge of Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 Felony, was dismissed.

He was sentenced to six years for Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony.

Leonard was given 105 days of jail credit, and the remaining term of five years and 260 days were suspended. Instead, he will be under probation during that time.

The South Bend Police Department and St. Joseph County Police Department responded to 800 block of W. Laurel Woods Court on May 18 for a reported shooting.

Police arrived to find a suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police used a drone, a K9, and the department's Real-Time Crime Center, to track Leonard to a nearby building, where he was arrested.
