UPDATE: 51-year-old man charged with multiple felonies for shooting woman on Union Street
ELKHART, Ind. -- UPDATE: The Elkhart Police Department reports an Elkhart County judicial officer found probable cause for the arrest of 51-year-old Contrel Phoenix, of Elkhart, regarding the non-fatal shooting of a 59-year-old woman on Union Street Monday morning.
Phoenix is facing preliminary charges of Attempted Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony, Attempted Criminal Confinement with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 3 Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony.
Phoenix's bond is set at $1 million, and the case has been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal criminal charges.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Elkhart Police reports officers were dispatched to 1589 W. Franklin St. after a 911 call of a shooting with injuries came in at 4:52 a.m., Monday.
Upon arrival, police found a 59-year-old female victim and a 51-year-old male suspect. Police say the man was in the driver's seat of a vehicle and the woman was in the passenger seat.
"The victim reported that the male suspect shot at her in the 100 block of Union St and then drove her to this location," EPD said.
The man was taken into custody, while the woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
