Shots fired near supermarket leads to crash, suspect arrested, woman critically injured

LA PORTE, Ind. -- The La Porte Police Department reports a suspect is in custody and a woman suffered critical life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon stemming from a call regarding shots fired.

Police say at around 4:04 p.m. that day, officers responded to shots fired near Al's Supermarket on the east side of La Porte.

Authorities determined a suspect had fired a round at four people before fleeing in a car.

Police say the suspect traveled through the city, including Ridge Street, Philadelphia Street, and Ohio Street corridors.

Investigators say during this time, the suspect fired additional rounds from the rear passenger seat at a witness following the car.

The report states the suspect vehicle then crashed into an unrelated vehicle at the intersection of Scott and Ohio Streets.

The woman driving the unrelated vehicle suffered critical injuries.

Police say the suspect then fled on foot. The suspect was located and arrested shortly after near the Maple Tree Apartments.

The investigation is ongoing. The suspect has not been identified at this time.

LPPD is asking any residents or businesses in the areas of Al’s Supermarket, Ridgeway, Philadelphia Street, Ohio Street, and surrounding neighborhoods review any surveillance or doorbell camera footage from the time of the incident.
