Sign up available for free rakings

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- United Way of Southwest Michigan announced that senior citizens can now register for volunteers to help clear their yards and gutters of leaves during the organization's Eleventh Annual “Rake A Difference”.

“Rake A Difference” is a free, volunteer-based service that helps clear yards and gutters for seniors, 60 and older, who cannot physically complete and financially afford the services otherwise.

Seniors in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren County can sign up for this program and will be serviced on a first come, first served basis as the work force of the volunteers will be limited.

“This year is extra special because ‘Rake A Difference’ falls on Veterans Day. Many of our seniors are veteran families. This day is a reminder about service to the community and that’s something we all can do. We invite volunteers in all three counties to sign up, but we do have a particular need for more in Cass,” said Debbie Ramirez, Volunteer Engagement Director of United Way of Southwest Michigan.

The deadline to sign up as a volunteer or a recipient of these services is October 15.

Seniors can call 269-932-3554 to be put on the servicing list.
