Six sent to hospital after SUV crashes into horse drawn buggy
VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the 45000 block of C.R. 388 in Bloomingdale Township on Friday around 7:45 p.m. for a crash involving an Amish buggy and an SUV.
Deputies arrived on scene to find a crashed buggy with six occupants.
Authorities say five of them had obvious injuries. Deputies then began life-saving measures on the occupant with the most serious injuries until ambulances arrived.
All six people were taken to area hospitals, four with serious injuries and one with critical injuries.
The driver of the SUV stayed on scene and was cooperative with deputies during the investigation.
Authorities' initial investigation determined the buggy was traveling west on C.R. 388 when it was hit from behind by the SUV.
Deputies say speed and alcohol both appeared to be factors in the crash.
The driver of the SUV was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury.
The driver was taken to the Van Buren County Jail, and C.R. 388 was closed for four hours while the crash was investigated.
The investigation is ongoing.
