South Bend Cubs opener postponed by weather, but fans still find plenty to enjoy
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Cubs’ season opener was canceled about an hour before first pitch because of unplayable field conditions caused by severe weather and heavy rainfall throughout the week. Even so, fans stayed in the ballpark and took part in much of the planned entertainment.
“Due to the significant rainfall in Michiana since Tuesday, it just came down to unplayable infield conditions and it’s all about player safety, and that was the top concern,” Brendan King, the team’s head of media relations, said. Although the game itself was postponed, many of the opening day traditions still went on. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown, team introductions were held and musician John Vincent performed several songs. Fans were also invited onto the field for autographs, while players took part in a lighthearted kickball game that appeared to keep the energy up throughout the evening. Despite the last-minute change, there were smiles across the stadium from both fans and players as the organization worked to turn a disappointing weather situation into a memorable night.
