NOW: South Bend Cubs unveil fan-focused upgrades ahead of Opening Day amid $48 million renovation

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Cubs are set to return to Four Winds Field on April 3rd, and team leaders say fans can expect a significantly upgraded experience both on and off the field.

With Opening Day less than a month away, the organization is in the middle of a $48 million renovation project at the ballpark.

Assistant General Manager Chris Hagstrom-Jones and owner Andrew Berlin said the renovations are designed to improve nearly every part of the fan experience. Capacity at Four Winds Field is increasing from about 8,000 to 10,000. New hotels are also being developed nearby to accommodate expected growth around the stadium.

Inside the ballpark, food service is getting a major overhaul. The kitchen space is expanding from one to three kitchens, and a new chef is leading the effort. Fans can also expect new menu items, including specialty hot dogs inspired by opposing teams, along with new pizza offerings and a grab-and-go market near Gate A.

Berlin added that the changes are being driven largely by fan feedback collected through postseason surveys.

“They are interested in cleanliness; they’re interested in the quality of the food. Are the kids having a good time? Are they safe and are the bathrooms clean? This is the feedback we get in the surveys, so we need to meet the needs of the moms, not just the baseball lovers, not just the kids, not just the dads,” Berlin said.

The South Bend Cubs open their season April 3. ABC57 will have coverage throughout the season.
