A fire in South Bend leaves building ablaze
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Mayor Pete Buttigieg and representatives from the League of American Bicyclists and the Bike Michiana Coalition unveiled the new Bike Friendly Community sign Wednesday morning.
South Bend earned a Silver Level designation from the League of American Bicyclists for its "Impressive commitments to bicycling."
Only 8 other Midwestern cities with a population of 100,000 or more have received Silver Level or higher designation.
The sign was installed at the corner of Washington Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Mayor Buttigieg is proud the city has achieved this status.
"This recognition places South Bend among the top cities in the entire Midwest when it comes to bicycle friendliness. I think that makes our community safer. I think it makes our community healthier and of course it makes our community more environmentally friendly too," Mayor Buttigieg said.
