South Bend Fire Department investigating afternoon fire as potential lightning strike

South Bend Fire Department SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After responding to an afternoon fire at a home, the South Bend Fire Department is investigating the incident as potentially caused by a lightning strike.
Firefighters were on the scene around 1:00 p.m. It happened in the 1000 block of N. Notre Dame Avenue. The fire was contained to the attic, and no one was home at the time. There were no injuries to firefighters.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, fire officials did note that there was significant lightning in the area, and early findings indicate that may have been the cause.
