SOUTH BEND, Ind. -

Two children were found walking down Michigan Street alone Sunday morning after their mother was murdered.

Police say a Good Samaritan found the 10-year-old girl carrying her 1-year-old sister around 8:45 a.m. Neither were wearing a coat or shoes. Police were called, prompting a welfare check at their home on the 3000 block of Michigan.

According to police, inside the home they found the children's mother who had been murdered.

"Can you imagine what that little girl saw? What she knows now? She’s 10, she will never forget that. The 1-year-old will never understand, cause she’s not old enough but the 10-year-old absolutely will know her mother as the victim of a murder and what she saw you can only imagine," said Commander Tim Corbett of Metro Homicide.

Sunday night, family members created a memorial outside of the home. They identified the victim as 33-year-old Kenyatta McCurry, who went by "Shay."

"A lot of hurt pain, anger, hurt, empty, sad, shocked. Shay's a good person, cares about everybody, made sure her family was straight," said cousin Malcolm Harrell.

According to family, Shay had three daughters, one son and another child on the way.

"I miss her already. This came too soon and I don’t know when we are going to get over this tragedy. We’re getting tired of this type of violence, it’s uncalled for. Anyone in a relationship like that please get up out of it. Its not worth your life," said cousin Chris Richardson.

An autopsy has been scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday morning.
