South Bend roundabout opens, more projects to come

Thursday marked a major milestone in the Smart Streets project.

A major roundabout at Michigan Street and Bartlett Street is now open.

The reopening is a nod to the progress that was made over the summer.

While this is one of the first major openings in the Smart Streets program, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says it's not the last.

"I didn't want to come out here and say mission accomplished because there are several more stages to go. Mid-October is when we'll have Main Street going two ways then we have the November deadline for Saint Joseph,” says Buttigieg.

The project board says they chose roundabouts because of how they handle traffic; they wanted it to flow smoother.
