South Bend woman arrested in wrong-way driver crash on Indiana Toll Road
ABC 57 LAKE COUNTY, Ind. -- A South Bend woman faces charges after allegedly driving the wrong way on the Indiana Toll Road and causing a fiery crash.
This happened yesterday, May 17, at about 4:27 a.m. in Lake County. Indiana State Police troopers were dispatched on a call of a head-on collision. At the scene, they found a red sedan on fire, and a dark-colored sedan with extensive damage. One trooper smelled alcohol coming from the second sedan.
The alleged victim, 27-year-old Gabriel Becerril Velasco of Elkhart, was the driver of the red sedan. He said that the suspect, 44-year-old Jennifer Lynn Wallace of South Bend, was driving in the wrong direction and hit him head-on.
Troopers say Wallace smelled strongly of alcohol. She refused a breathalyzer test. A search warrant for her blood was authorized by a Lake County judge. Wallace was then taken to jail. She faces five misdemeanor charges.
Velasco was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and was released the same day.
