SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A South Bend woman is charged with alleged Arson and Criminal Vandalism after investigators say she targeted a victim's home.

The suspect in this case is 38-year-old Alice Smith.

It happened late last week, on or around July 16. Officers were called out to the alleged victim's home after the victim says they were woken up by the sound of shattering glass. They told officers they saw a person standing near their home; investigators say home surveillance video appears to show a person holding something glowing near a bush against the house and adjacent to the shattered window.

Officials say burned material was found in that bush, and that it smelled like a fire had been put out.

Officers searched the area and found Smith. Investigators say she had a partially melted lighter that she claimed she carried for "defense."

A court date for her has not been set.
