NOW: Southwest Michigan employers awarded $2.26M in grants to train, develop, retain workers

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, an organization focused on building a skilled workforce through education and training for regional employers, announced it has secured $2.26 million in grants from Michigan's Going PRO Talent Fund to support 40 local employers.

Officials say the funds will be used by the employers for training, developing, and retaining workers.

“The Going PRO Talent Fund continues to be a high demand resource for employers across the state,” said Mark O’Reilly, Director of Business Solutions at Michigan Works! “When we build talent through training, we strengthen the foundation of our workforce and the future of our economy. We’re excited to support employers with upskilling and training 1,097 new workers, incumbent workers, and apprentices without the financial stress that comes with it.”

Training programs eligible for funding include classroom training, which officials say prepare individuals with the skill set required to meet employers' needs and diversify the skill sets of current employees.

The awarded employers can also receive onsite job training reimbursement for wages paid while training a new or existing worker on a new process, new technology, or new machines.

Michigan Works! and the employers will work with training providers, including Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center, Lake Michigan College, and Southwestern Michigan College to deliver the grant-funded training.
