ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- At a St. Joseph County Commissioners meeting Tuesday night, they voted unanimously for phase two of the courthouse repair.
Officials approved $2.1 million for repairs due to the leaky roof causing damage to the courthouse.
They're also in talks with the Historical Preservation Society to make sure when they need to rebuild anything, it will look as close to the original look as possible. They plan on trying to save as much of the original building as they can.
Commissioners couldn't confirm an exact date for when the repairs will be finished, but officials are hopeful for completion by the spring.
President of the Board of County Commissioners Carl Baxmayer said, "We wanted to present to the council and the community, a comprehensive look of what has to be done immediately. What could be deferred for a period of time. But the goal is to have our buildings warm, safe and dry, for the public, for our employees, and be able to stay open."
Commissioners are also looking to replace the boilers in the County-City building, which will cost about $1 million to replace and is expected to be completed by the fall.
