St. Margaret’s House hosts 27th Winter Walk in downtown South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- More than 500 people filled the streets of downtown South Bend on Sunday afternoon for the 27th annual Winter Walk, a one-mile fundraiser supporting St. Margaret’s House and the women it serves.
Police blocked off several streets as a marching band led participants through downtown in one-mile-walk that organizers described as a homage to the resilience of the women who often have no choice but to walk to access their resources.
The annual event, held regardless of weather conditions, symbolizes the daily challenges faced by women who rely on the nonprofit for meals, resources and community.
“It’s really meant to be symbolic of the walk that many of our guests who use St. Margaret’s House have to take on a regular basis,” said Lauren Smyth, senior director of strategy and development. “We invite the community to come every year and say, regardless of the weather, no matter what’s happening outside, we walk with you.”
This year’s walk began at the Cathedral of St. James, where St. Margaret’s House is temporarily operating during a historic renovation of its downtown facility. The route ended at South Bend City Church, where participants gathered to refuel and celebrate.
Smyth said the renovation of the facility, originally a printing press that is now over 100 years old, will allow the organization to expand its services.
“We can see more women, we can offer more meals every day,” she said. “We’re going to be able to reintroduce a laundry room and our shower facilities are expanding.”
South Bend Mayor James Mueller spoke at the church following the walk, thanking the nonprofit for its continued commitment to the community.
Organizers said more than $63,000 has been raised so far. The nonprofit aims for the Winter Walk to be its largest donation day of the year and are still accepting donations through their website.
