Stolen vehicle leads to crash, Elkhart County Homicide Unit investigating

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating after a driver allegedly stole a vehicle and led police on a chase before being severely injured in a crash, according to the Goshen Police Department.

At 11:15 a.m. on Friday, officers were notified of a stolen vehicle in a gas station parking lot in the 4500 block of Elkhart Road.

When Goshen officers and deputies with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office tried to stop the Kia, which was reported stolen from Berrien Springs, the driver allegedly drove off, heading toward Elkhart.

At 11:21 a.m., the Kia was involved in a crash with another vehicle and hit a tree at the intersection of Hively Avenue and Prairie Street.

The driver was trapped inside the Kia and had to be extracted, reports said.

He was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

No one else was injured in the crash.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is leading the investigation.
