SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- With sunny conditions the rest of this week, the sun is coming out, and when it does it is going to be at an angle similar to where the sun is in August.
At the summer solstice, the sun is at its highest point in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere. Since that happens near the end of June, we can deduce that the sun would likely be at a similar angle both at the beginning of May and the beginning of August.
Most people may not realize that because it’s May, it’s still spring, but it is also still a high sun angle.
Hopefully we aren’t going to see many overcast days in the next week, but you can still be sunburnt on overcast days.
While the sun may be diffused more by the cloud cover, if you are outside long enough, you’ll get burnt because there is still sunlight seeping through the clouds.
The other misconception about sunscreen application is that if you’re in the water you don’t need to be putting on that sunscreen.
Well, water does the almost exact opposite of the clouds, instead of diffusing the light, it could magnify the sunlight on your skin.
Again, it's always a good idea to reapply through the day, and make sure that your sunscreen from last season isn’t expired.
