Suspect flees in stolen vehicle, nearly hits student at bus stop

Indiana State Police

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports the Indiana State Police have a suspect in custody for fleeing a felony stop in Elkhart before later crashing in Marshall County.

Police located a stolen Ford Edge parked at 204 Middlebury St. with a man sleeping inside around 7:26 a.m., Wednesday.

Additional officers arrived to conduct the felony stop on the vehicle.

Authorities say that's when the suspect fled in the stolen Edge, traveling east on Middlebury Street.

A vehicle pursuit was then initiated, during which the suspect drove toward a bus stop where multiple teenage students were waiting.

One teenage girl at the bus stop stumbled or fell while avoiding the suspect vehicle, causing her to make contact with the rear of the suspect vehicle.

Due to the circumstances and potential dangers to the public in continuing the pursuit, officers terminated the pursuit.

Officers immediately tended to the girl that made contact with the fleeing vehicle.

She was then checked out at the scene by medics. After determining she was okay and contacting her parents, she was taken to Elkhart High School by an EPD School Resource Officer.

EPD subsequently learned ISP found the suspect and vehicle in Marshall County near Plymouth.

The suspect was taken into custody in connection with ISP’s pursuit.

The Indiana State Police reported at around 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, they received information that this stolen vehicle was possibly at a gas station near the intersection of US 6 and Michigan Road near Lapaz.

A trooper responded to the area and confirmed it was the vehicle in question.

As troopers arrived, the suspect fled in the vehicle.

During the following pursuit, the suspect traveled north in the southbound lanes. A trooper traveling south nearly hit the suspect vehicle but drove off the roadway in time to avoid it.

The suspect continued south approaching the roundabout for Veteran’s Parkway, just north of Plymouth.

As the Ford approached, the driver swerved towards another police vehicle before driving into a ditch where two Plymouth police officers were attempting to deploy stop sticks.

The two officers were able avoid being hit.

The Ford continued south in the ditch before striking a white Toyota Prius approaching the roundabout from the east.

This caused the Ford to spin and come to a stop on the southeast side of the roundabout.

Authorities were able to box the vehicle in.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Jamarius Bryant of Indianapolis, kicked out a rear window of the Ford and fled south on foot.

Bryant was then tazed and taken into custody.

After being medically cleared, he was taken to the Marshall County Jail for Attempted Murder, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Theft.
