Suspect in Bleachers fatal shooting appears in court

NOW: Suspect in Bleachers fatal shooting appears in court

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The man accused of killing Avery Brown at the now-closed Bleachers Bar was in court on Tuesday for his initial hearing.

During the hearing, his trial date was set for June 10th.

After the hearing, Avery Brown's mother and cousin sat down with ABC57 about being at the hearing and seeing Mayberry.

"It wasn't bad, I thought it would be really hard, but God is good and everything went smooth," Linda Brown, Avery's mother, said.

“It was hard seeing him, I was hoping he would at least look up and make eye contact with some type of remorse or regret, we didn’t get that today but I’m sure in the future justice will be served for Avery," Dawn Brown, Avery's cousin, said.

Dawn says she would like to see Mayberry show some remorse at his June trial.

"Hopefully by June he’ll be able to show some remorse and regret for what he’s done, it’s a long time, our family is going to continue to pray that whole time," Dawn said.

Avery's mom wants justice but she also wants answers.

“Everyone loved Avery so much that we’re just fighting for justice as a whole," Linda said. "I want justice served and I want the truth, that’s what I’m asking. I want to know the reason.”
