Suspect in Elkhart murder-suicide had military background, per Army spokesperson

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- We're learning more about the suspect in an Elkhart shooting that left two dead and one hurt.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Army confirms to ABC57 news that Adonis Joseph was enlisted as a cavalry scout from December 2008 to February 2010. He was then an engineer in the National Guard from February 2010 to July 2017.

Joseph is the suspect in a shooting at an apartment on Links Drive in Elkhart that happened Monday, April 27. Kaylon Wood was killed and a female victim was treated for serious injuries; she is still in the hospital. Joseph was later found in a burning home in St. Joseph County the same day. His autopsy showed his cause of death was suicide by gunshot.

ABC57 also recently confirmed that Joseph was a former South Bend police officer beginning in 2011. In December 2017, per Chief Scott Ruszkowski, the Police Department’s Internal Affairs began an investigation into allegations involving Joseph, leading to him being relieved of duty.
