The History Museum is requesting relocation of the historic Navarre Cabin
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - St. Joseph County's oldest residence could soon be moved to a new home.
The History Museum wants to relocate the Navarre Cabin, which is currently vacated at Leeper Park East, to their campus to make better use of the historical property.
They also believe it would help them take better care of the property, which was previously in a massive state of disrepair.
The establishment, which was built in 1820, was once home to French-American trapper Pierre Navarre, who is credited with establishing a fur-trading post for the American Fur Company.
The cabin was previously donated to the Northern Indiana Historical Society (now the South Bend History Museum) and has been in its current spot at Leeper Park since 1954. It was also moved on three other previous occasions.
This is the second recent attempt that the Museum will make to move the property, as they made a similar effort three years ago. Their previous request was denied by the Historic Preservation Commission.
They will submit their application in mid-November and follow-up with an additional request if necessary.
