Three children dead in early morning crash, driver faces multiple felony charges
ABC 57 HOBART, Ind. -- Three children are dead and a woman is facing multiple criminal charges following a crash on I-65 south in Hobart, Ind. around midnight Friday.
The Indiana State Police report Lowell Post troopers responded to the scene near mile-marker 257.2 to find a blue Ford Explorer facing west, blocking two southbound lanes.
Police say the Explorer rear-ended a Freightliner Cascadia box truck at a high rate of speed. The report states the truck had been parked on the right shoulder of I-65 due to mechanical issues.
The driver of the Explorer, identified as Renee Foster of Gary, sustained upper body injuries and was taken to Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point for treatment.
Foster and the truckdriver both consented to blood draws. Alcohol consumption is believed to be a factor in the crash. Felony charges have been submitted to the Lake County Prosecutor's Office.
Foster is facing four counts of Neglect of a Dependent, as Level 5 Felonies, Reckless Driving, a Class A Misdemeanor, Driving with a Suspended Vehicle Registration, a Class C Misdemeanor, and four counts of Child Restraint Violations, as Infractions.
Police say OWI charges may be submitted once blood draw results come back.
Authorities' investigation determined Foster was traveling in the right lane when she allegedly fell asleep before driving off the road, colliding with the rear of the truck.
Police say the Explorer suffered "catastrophic damage" upon impact, causing the unrestrained front seat passenger, a child, to be ejected, suffering fatal injuries.
A second child, seated in the rear left passenger seat improperly restrained, also died from their injuries. A third child, seated in the rear middle passenger seat improperly restrained, died from injuries sustained as well.
The fourth child passenger, seated in the middle seat of the third row improperly restrained, suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to the University of Chicago for treatment.
The truckdriver was uninjured.
The children's ages remain under investigation, ISP says.
