Three juveniles arrested in Michigan City April 15 on multiple charges
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Three juveniles, aged 17, 15, and 12 years old, are currently housed in the La Porte County Juvenile Services Center after being arrest Monday night for multiple charges including Theft of a Firearm, Auto Theft, and Resisting Law Enforcement.
Indiana State Police say that at around 10:15 p.m. on April 15, an ISP trooper was patrolling in Michigan City when a dispatch went out about a shooting that just happened in the city. The suspect vehicle was described as a white Volkswagen Jetta and the suspect vehicle had been reported as stolen.
At around the same time the call went out, ISP says the trooper saw a white Volkswagen Jetta heading south on Franklin Street near Meijer.
"The vehicle and license plate matched the description of the suspect vehicle that had been involved in the earlier reported shooting," ISP said. "Trooper Isajczuk attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle; however, the driver refused to stop and accelerated away at a high rate of speed. A pursuit was initiated, and the pursuit continued onto I-94 westbound into Porter County."
Authorities say as the white Jetta passed under the S.R. 49 overpass, the driver made a U-turn on and started going the wrong way up I-94 onto the S.R. 49 westbound entrance ramp.
"As the vehicle reached the top of the ramp, it struck a concrete barrier and was disabled," ISP said. "A front seat passenger exited the vehicle and ran northeast across S.R. 49. The remaining occupants were taken into custody without further incident. A search of the area was conducted for the passenger that fled, but those efforts were unsuccessful in locating the individual. A handgun was also located on the backseat floorboard of the Volkswagen."
The three suspects who stayed in the vehicle were taken into custody and transported to the La Porte County Juvenile Services Center.
ISP says the original shooting is being investigated by the Michigan City Police Department.
The three suspects are being held on several charges, including but not limited to:
- Theft of a Firearm
- Auto Theft
- Resisting Law Enforcement
- Dangerous Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile
- Operating a Motor Vehicle While Never Licensed
- Reckless Driving
- All suspects are presumed to be innocent until/unless proven guilty in court.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to reach out to ISP of the Michigan City Police Department.
