Towns along Mississippi River evacuated as river crests

ALTON, Mo. — Flooding from the rising rivers have swamped one town along the Mississippi River.

The National Weather Service says levees have been breached in the west Alton area.

Families there have been told to evacuate.

Roads have been shutdown and drivers warned to avoid high and swift moving waters after days of heavy rain caused the rivers to swell.

The Mississippi River in Alton is expected to crest Tuesday.
